Hemp seeds are a versatile and nutritious complementary feed for horses.

Finnish-grown oil hemp seeds are rich in high-quality fibre, omega fatty acids and high-quality protein, but low in sugar and starch.

Hemp is also well suited as a feed for horses that cannot tolerate grains in their diet or that suffer from metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance or susceptibility to laminitis. Due to its relatively high fat content, hemp is also suitable for providing additional energy.

Hemp seeds contain a wide range of nutrients that support the body's well-being.

  • Hemp seeds are rich in essential fatty acids, valuable gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) and stearidonic acid (SDA), as well as alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). Studies conducted on dogs have found that omega fatty acids support joint metabolism in connection with osteoarthritis.
  • Fatty acids are important for all horses and are also needed for normal growth and development of young horses.
  • The fatty acids in hemp are in an optimal ratio of 3:1 (Omega-6 and omega-3). Omega fatty acids help maintain the natural well-being of the skin, coat and mane/tail hair.
  • Hemp naturally contains a high amount of vitamin E, which is an important antioxidant.
  • The protein in hemp seeds contains all essential amino acids. Over 500 different amino acids are known, of which 21 are essential for horses. A healthy horse's body can produce 12 amino acids on its own, so the remaining nine essential amino acids must be obtained from the diet.
  • Hemp protein consists of 65% edestin and 35% albumin, which are high-quality and highly absorbable. Hemp protein does not contain the trypsin inhibitors typical of soy that impair absorption.
  • The carbohydrate content of hemp is entirely fibre. Of the fibre, 24 g is insoluble and 6 g is soluble fibre. The high fibre content helps balance digestive function.
