Bilberry Leaf for horses and dogs

(Vaccinium myrtillus)

Bilberry leaf is a naturally sourced, traditionally used herb utilised in the feeding of horses and dogs thanks to its versatile plant-based composition. The leaves contain several compounds naturally found in plants and trace elements, making them a pleasant addition to a balanced and varied diet.

Bilberry leaves are particularly notable for the plant's own protective compounds as well as the characteristic structure and aroma of the leaves.

Natural composition – what does bilberry leaf contain?

The composition of bilberry leaf is based on its natural plant structure and the plant's own compounds. The leaves contain, among others:

  • Tannins – astringent compounds typical of leafy plants

  • Flavonoids and other polyphenols – the plant's own protective compounds

  • Organic acids – part of the plant's normal metabolism

  • Inulin – a natural carbohydrate found in plants

  • Iridoids – bitter compounds typical of plants

  • Phenolic compounds, such as quercetin and catechins

These compounds are a natural part of the bilberry leaf's structure and make it a chemically rich and distinctive nutritional herb.

Trace elements as part of the plant's nutritional content

Bilberry leaves also naturally contain trace elements as part of the plant's own nutritional profile. Of these, chromium is one – it occurs in the leaves in small amounts (typically around 0,05–0,3 mg/kg dry matter).

Trace elements are part of normal nutrient intake and support a balanced, plant-based diet as a whole.

Use in horse feeding

Bilberry leaf can be used as part of the daily diet for horses or periodically when you want to add plant-based compounds and a little variety to the diet.

The leaf material is quite dense and aromatic, so periodic use is recommended rather than continuous use.

Please note

Bilberry leaves naturally contain oxalic acid, which is why:

  • prolonged continuous use is not recommended

  • not recommended for pregnant or lactating animals
