Phytogenic milk thistle is a pharmacologically well-known herb used both as a medicine and a dietary supplement. Its most important active properties are based on the silymarin compound found in the seeds (containing silibin, silychristin, silydianin).
Milk thistle seeds are rich in flavonoids known as silymarin. According to studies conducted on horses, milk thistle may have a positive effect on the horse's well-being, energy metabolism and blood serum.
According to a study conducted on competition horses, liver and oxidative damage in the body are closely linked. One study followed the effect of feeding milk thistle on the biochemical indicators of equine plasma and found that milk thistle may have positive effects on equine health.
Silymarin is considered a dietary supplement recommended for dogs, cats and horses with liver problems, but no clinical studies have been conducted on its efficacy, as studies on these animals are limited.
A study conducted in Colorado found that the silymarin contained in milk thistle seeds may have positive effects on equine liver function. The antioxidant effect of milk thistle silymarin has been thoroughly studied in recent years. Silymarin has been proven to have an effect in counteracting the toxicity of antibiotics, metals and pesticides.
Its antioxidant effects may be even more potent than those of vitamin E, often referred to as the super vitamin.
10- 40 g /day
2-6 g / day.
1 tbsp weighs approximately 10g.
Best results are achieved by feeding as courses of 6-12 weeks.
Always start with a small dose and increase gradually.
Not for pregnant animals.
Milk thistle is not suitable for horses/dogs that are hypersensitive to plants of the Asteraceae (daisy) family.
Milk thistle may help maintain skin well-being. No toxic effects of silymarin have been observed even at high doses. In a few cases, a mild laxative effect has been noted.
