Omega fatty acids ensure a glossy coat, mane and tail, and healthy skin.
Linoleic acid (omega-6) and alpha-linolenic acid (omega-3) are polyunsaturated essential fatty acids found in plant fats. They are present in high amounts especially in flaxseed and flaxseed oil, fish oil, and of course chia. In chia, the fatty acid ratio is optimal at 3:1. Chia contains 18.8% omega-3 fatty acids and 5.9% omega-6 fatty acids.
Omega fatty acids, among other things, support coat and skin condition, strengthen the immune system, help reduce inflammation, and maintain healthy mucous membranes. Brittle and dry manes and tails can also be revitalized with chia. Thanks to its high fat content, chia gives the coat a natural shine. Omega fatty acids have been suggested to help alleviate, in horses, issues such as respiratory infections, allergies, and reactions to insect bites. Fatty acid balance is also an essential factor in managing itchy summer eczema, as horses eating chia tend to have oilier skin. Omega fatty acids are also needed for skin and cellular renewal, supporting balanced blood values (blood pressure and cholesterol), and joint function. Adequate fatty acid intake is also important for pregnant mares.
