Hawthorn berries, rich in vitamins and high in antioxidants, are nutritious and versatile fodder for horses. Hawthorn contains several different vitamins and flavonoids, which act as antioxidants in the body. The most common nutrients that act as antioxidants are vitamins C and E.
Antioxidants are the body's natural cell-protecting defense against reactive oxygen compounds, such as harm caused by free radicals. The body itself produces a whole set of enzymes that act as antioxidants. They therefore prevent, neutralize and repair damage caused by a large amount of reactive oxygen compounds and can thus prevent or slow down the onset of many different ailments caused by oxidative stress.
Hawthorn berries contain a lot of vitamin C, which acts as an antioxidant in the body, protecting cells from oxidative stress. Vitamin C has also been studied to affect immunity, i.e. to maintain the normal functioning of the immune system.
