Pumpkin seeds – a nutrient-rich and palatable seed for horse and dog feeding
Pumpkin seeds are a nutrient-rich and highly palatable seed for many animals, used in horse and dog feeding when you want to add protein, fatty acids, and minerals and vitamins to the diet. They are easy to use, nutritious & versatile, and suitable for many different feeding regimes.
Protein and fat – naturally from seeds
Pumpkin seeds are rich in protein, typically around
23–25 g protein / 100 g, making them a great addition to the diet when you also want to obtain protein from seeds. The fat content is approximately 46 g / 100 g, mainly: polyunsaturated linoleic acid and monounsaturated oleic acid.
Fats are an essential part of the diet's energy content and fatty acid composition. Seeds are a natural source of these and provide a high amount of nutrients in a small quantity.
Fatty acids and the skin–coat complex
Fatty acids are part of the skin and coat normal structure. The skin and coat are constantly renewing, and fat composition plays an important role in this process.
Pumpkin seeds are often used in feeding periodically when the aim is to address the nutritional aspects related to skin and coat.
Vitamins and minerals – the amounts matter
Pumpkin seeds naturally contain several minerals and vitamins. On average, 100 g of pumpkin seeds contains:
Minerals: Magnesium: 535 mg, Phosphorus: 1174 mg, Manganese: 3,0 mg, Iron: 15 mg, Sodium: 18 mg
Vitamins and other nutrients:
B-group vitamins (incl. thiamine, B6, folate), vitamin K, naturally vitamin E, especially alpha-tocopherol (approx. 34,5 mg / 100 g), as well as gamma-tocopherol and delta-tocopherol, tryptophan (approx. 595 mg / 100 g) and carotenoids naturally found in plants.
