Meadowsweet for horses

Meadowsweet (Filipendula ulmaria) is a traditional meadow plant that has been used for centuries as part of herbal-based feeding. It is known for its diverse phytochemical composition and its historical connection to salicylates.

In feeding, the leaves and flowers of meadowsweet are used, bringing compounds naturally found in plants to the horse's diet as part of a varied and diverse whole.

Aspirin background – from the perspective of the plant's history

Meadowsweet naturally contains salicylates (according to literature, approximately 1–3 mg / g of dried plant material), which are the plant's own compounds. Research into these compounds was once part of the scientific development that later led to the creation of synthetic acetylsalicylic acid – aspirin.

In dietary use, meadowsweet is not a medicine or aspirin, but dried plant material used as such as part of a plant-based diet. The aspirin reference describes the plant's historical and phytochemical background.

Natural composition

The composition of meadowsweet is based on its plant structure and naturally occurring compounds, found especially in the leaves and flowers:

  • Salicylates – the plant's own compounds

  • Tannins – typically about 5–10 % of dry matter

  • Flavonoids and other polyphenols – compounds naturally found in plants

  • Essential oils – contribute to the plant's aroma and distinctive scent

  • Vitamin C – a water-soluble vitamin typical of plants

These compounds are part of the natural structure of meadowsweet and make it an aromatic and easily recognisable herbal raw material.

Meadowsweet as part of the diet

From a feeding perspective, meadowsweet brings to the horse's diet:

  • diverse plant material

  • natural compounds typically found in plants

  • a traditional and aromatic herbal addition as part of a varied diet

The product is used as part of a balanced diet, not as a medicine or treatment.

Dosage:

Horse (approx. 500 kg):
1–4 tbsp / day

1 tbsp ≈ 5 g
Mix into the regular feed.

Start with a small dose and increase the amount gradually.

Please note

  • Not for pregnant mares

  • When competing, a 4-day withdrawal period is recommended (contains natural salicylates)

  • Large doses may affect stool consistency

  • For sensitive horses, a gradual introduction is recommended

  • Use with caution for horses with pollen sensitivities

Summary

Meadowsweet is a traditional and versatile plant whose use is based on its natural composition, long history, and plant-based nutritional tradition. It complements the horse's diet as a natural herb when more variety is desired in the diet.
