Sand Eater – herbal blend for your horse's varied diet

Sand Eater is a 100% natural, herb-based complementary feed that brings fibre, plant-based minerals and other compounds naturally found in plants to the horse's diet. The blend consists of roots, seeds, leaves and natural minerals. The blend is often used as part of a varied diet, especially for horses that lick the ground or eat soil.

Natural behaviour of the horse

In the wild, horses spend a large part of the day searching for food and grazing. At the same time, a horse may dig the ground, eat roots or lick soil. This type of behaviour is part of the horse's natural way of exploring its environment and seeking nutrition.

In stables and paddocks, similar behaviour can sometimes be observed, for example licking the ground or digging up roots. The phenomenon is familiar to many horse owners, but its underlying causes are not precisely known.

In such situations, particular attention is often paid to the overall diet, adequate fibre intake, and the supply of minerals and other nutrients.

Plant fibre in the horse's diet

The horse's digestion is largely based on fibre. A large proportion of feed is processed in the large intestine, where gut microbes break down plant fibre as part of the horse's normal digestion.

In a plant-based diet, seeds, roots and leaves naturally bring various types of fibre and compounds naturally found in plants to the diet. In herbal blends, such plants provide plant fibre as well as other nutrients.

Seeds, roots and clay minerals in herbal blends

Many herb-based blends combine seeds, root plants and natural clay minerals. These raw materials have different nutritional compositions, and together they bring a diverse combination of plant fibre, compounds naturally found in plants, and natural minerals to the diet.

For example, chia seeds are rich in plant fibre and fatty acids. Root plants such as dandelion root and liquorice root naturally contain fibre and compounds naturally found in plants. Bentonite is a natural clay mineral.

Root plants in herbal blends

Many herbal blends use root plants such as dandelion root and liquorice root. Root plants naturally contain fibre as well as many compounds naturally found in plants, which are part of the plants' natural nutritional composition.

Dandelion root naturally contains inulin, which belongs to the storage carbohydrates of plants. Liquorice root, in turn, contains compounds naturally found in plants, such as flavonoids and other polyphenols.

Icelandic moss is a traditionally used lichen that naturally contains fibre and other compounds typical of lichens.
