Thyme is full of important phytonutrients, minerals and vitamins.
Thyme is particularly rich in vitamin A (4751 IU) and vitamin C (160 mg/100 g). Vitamin A is an antioxidant that is important for the well-being of mucous membranes and skin. Vitamin C is important for immune resistance and protects against harmful free radicals.

Several chemical compounds and essential oils make up the main composition of thyme. Thymol belongs to phenolic monoterpenes and is found abundantly mainly in thyme species. It is one of the most important compounds in thyme. Thyme contains essential oils, of which the best-known ingredient is thymol (30-60 %). In addition to thymol, other active compounds forming this essential oil include carvacrol, p-cymene and gamma-terpinene. Thymol is an important phenolic component that is primarily responsible for the antioxidant activity of thyme.

Studies have reported that thyme contains 56,53 % monoterpenes, 28,69 % monoterpene hydrocarbons, 5,04 % sesquiterpene hydrocarbons and 1,84 % oxygenated sesquiterpenes. Thyme is rich in flavonoids and phenolic antioxidants such as zeaxanthin, lutein, apigenin, naringenin, luteolin and thymonin. *

In a study on ethnoveterinary medicine utilising folk knowledge, thyme has been used to support the normal function of the respiratory tract, among other things.

Thyme supports normal digestive functions and the essential oils it contains help balance intestinal gases produced during digestion, making it potentially beneficial for gas-sensitive horses.

Externally, thyme can be used for various hoof and frog poultices.

Dog:
