Valerian herb (Valeriana officinalis) has been traditionally used to calm people and relieve stress. The roots of the plant contain active substances that promote a calming effect. Valerian works by inhibiting the enzyme that breaks down the inhibitory neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the brain. This increases the level of GABA receptor activation, producing a calming effect.
Valerian is a calming and mood-balancing supplement for nervous, hyperactive, and agitated horses. Suitable for use as a course 3–4 days before an anticipated stressful situation, or for longer-term use, for example during box rest or sick leave.
Can also be used for mares to alleviate "irritability".
Approximately 150 different plant compounds have been identified in valerian.
People often use valerian as a calming evening tea to help with falling asleep.
Dosage:
Horse 500 kg:
1-3 tbsp per day mixed into the regular feed. Daily dose approx. 15 g.

Recent studies have found that regular use provides better results than occasional use. The effect improves with prolonged use, meaning that if the situation requires it, valerian use can be continued for longer / as long as there is a need.
