Hemp Is an Excellent Protein Supplement for Horses

High-quality seed oil has been shown to reduce skin itching

Hemp protein is a high-quality plant protein because it contains all essential amino acids the body needs. The protein in hemp is more easily absorbed than soy protein because hemp protein consists of edestin and albumin—both high-quality protein sources that contain all the amino acids required by the body. Unlike many legumes, hemp does not contain typical anti-nutritional factors; hemp protein is naturally easy to digest and absorb.

Hemp seed is also an excellent source of essential fatty acids. About one third of the hemp seed is nutritionally valuable oil. The fatty acid profile of hemp oil is more diverse than that of commonly used vegetable oils. Hemp contains about 80% polyunsaturated fatty acids, and its omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids are in a perfect 3:1 ratio. In addition, the oil contains rare fatty acids—gamma-linolenic acid and stearidonic acid—which are highly valuable for overall well-being.

In a clinical nutrition study, hemp oil was shown to alleviate symptoms of atopic dermatitis (Journal of Dermatological Treatment. 2005; 16:87–94). The study found that when hemp seed oil was used, skin dryness decreased and itching was reduced.

Hemp’s carbohydrates consist of both soluble and insoluble fiber. Most of the fiber is insoluble, meaning it acts as a natural “cleanser” for the intestines.

Hemp seed contains approximately 30% protein, about 30% oil, and about 30% carbohydrates. The vitamin E found in hemp is also an excellent antioxidant supplement.

Domestic hemp seed is not only an ethical choice but also an environmentally friendly product, as its cultivation does not require pesticides or herbicides.
